About the Project:
Through an extensive search process done through a juried process, the selection committee composed of community members, leaders, and visual arts organizations, an artist and their design was chosen for the site. This new mural will be located on the Historic Landmark building on the intersection of Scott Street and North 2nd Street in Wausau, Wisconsin.
Artist Lindsey Cherek Waller, originally from Central Wisconsin and their design was chosen. Lindsey is a queer artist based in the rural midwest. Lindsey focuses a lot of their work on creating a blueprint for the community-focused world they want to live in. They view their role in the community, and the world, is to lead and show others an example of what a young, queer artist can look like in a rural landscape. Their efforts are to inspire people in our community and beyond to live their truths and achieve their dreams. Lindsey owns a business as a full-time artist and has worked with brands such as Urban Outfitters, CB2 and more. They earned their BFA in painting from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, and have experience exhibiting work around the country including in; Los Angeles, New York City, and Minneapolis.
Lindsey begins painting the week of August 6th and finishes on September 4th, 2024. Community members and visitors are welcome and encouraged to visit Lindsey during their painting hours and watch the mural unfold. Though the final design and mural will be unveiled and celebrated on Saturday, September 7th, 2024 during Artrageous Weekend. More details to follow in regard to this public celebration.
The CVA is committed to going beyond the mural, and further engaging the space with a variety of free community workshops. The first being Thursday, August 15th during the Wausau River Districtโs Night Market, from 5pm to 8pm. This drop in community workshop will include recycling-can painting and creating wildflower seed bombs.
YOUTH MURAL FELLOW:
Because of the CVAโs community-minded nature, and commitment to art education, the CVA will also host an opportunity for a paid Youth Mural Fellow to assist Lindsey in installing this mural. Young artists ages 16-21 interested in applying are encouraged to apply here. Applications are due Wednesday 7/31/24
